Family Soup presents a parent and child workshop for children on the autism spectrum, ages 2 ½ to 6, using “floor time” techniques.
Children with autism are often self absorbed and very hard to reach, which can make playtime very difficult and frustrating. Parents often feel rejected and hopeless after having tried many strategies to engage their child. In this workshop, parents will learn:
- Basic principles of “floor time” techniques
- How to enter into a shared world with their child
- How to play with their child
- How to help their child communicate wants and needs
Mary Nunez will facilitate the workshop. Mary is the mother of three boys, two of whom have autism. After two years of unsuccessful attempts to engage her children, Mary learned about and started implementing “floor time” techniques. Now her children are able to enter into “a shared world” with their family and others. Over the past two and a half years, Mary has spent over 1000 hours of clinical intervention time, phone sessions, and on-line courses in “floor time”.
Classes start March 9, 2011. Please call Mary Pickering at 751-1925 for more information or to apply. Application deadline is Friday, March 4, 2011. This workshop is free of charge and open to residents of Sutter, Yuba, and Colusa counties.
