What is Able Riders?
Able Riders is a 4-H Community Club
Sponsored by Sutter County Parent
Network. This Therapeutic horseback riding
program has been serving children with
disabilities in the Yuba-Sutter area since 1990.
Who can benefit?
Able Riders can be beneficial to
individuals with such conditions as:
Cerebral Palsy
Down Syndrome
Autism
Emotional Disturbance
Sensory Disorders
Depression
Traumatic Brain Injury
Learning Disabilities and more.
Our riders benefit from weekly lessons
geared to their ability.
Our Volunteers
We welcome new volunteers as part of
our program. Our volunteers may
participate in all aspects of our program
including side walking and fundraising.
We offer training and seek people who
want to truly make a difference in the
lives of special needs children. While
horse experience is desired, it is not
necessary.
Our Horses
The horses we choose are very gentle and have a
good disposition. They are trained to adapt to the
needs of their special riders. Because horseback
riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider’s
body in a manner similar to a human gait, the rider
experiences a freedom that they wouldn’t have
without their special equine friends.
Our Program
We ride on Tuesday evenings at Butte Star Ranch,
8807 South Butte Road, in Sutter. The first of four
45 minute sessions begins at 5:30 p.m. We limit
each session to four riders, which allows for more
individualized instruction and greater safety for
riders and volunteers. Each rider, depending on
their ability, may require up to three volunteers.
Riders must be at least 6 years old or older.
