Individual Education Plan (IEP) Help  By Cindy E. Chandler

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We need your volunteer support to continue offering help to
parents at IEP meetings and to network parents with children
with special needs. All of the support for school-age children
is provided on a volunteer basis. You will find that
volunteering is rewarding in so many ways. Volunteers are
offered free training at FamilySOUP and at workshops locally
and in Sacramento.

You’ll get a chance to meet other families with similar
concerns, make a difference learn communication skills, and
become familiar with parent rights. Every child benefits when
parents are knowledgeable, informed, and involved. By
volunteering for training you will be helping your child first. By
talking to other parents you’ll learn even more.
If you are interesting in volunteering or just taking some
training on special education, please call Cindy at 751-1925.

Summer a Good Time to Organize
I hope you have been able to use some of the tips and
suggestions on record keeping, organization and
communication during the current school year. On top of all of
the activities in which you and your children are involved, it’s
not easy to start new systems and maintain them. Things come
up and our best intentions are often derailed. That’s life.
But don’t give up.

I continue to struggle keeping records organized. It took more
than a few years to commit all the IEP’s, assessments, reports,
STAR testing and work samples to the big 3-ring binder. But
once I did it and started taking it to IEP meetings and IPP
(Individualized Person Planning) meetings for regional center,
it helped put academic and social progress in perspective and
made keeping up with other team members when referring to
past assessments and goals much easier. There were even
times when I could offer a document or two for the team to add
to their files.

So take the leap. The summer is a fine time to empty the
boxes, files, and piles and straighten-up your IEP-life. Need a
binder, dividers, business card holders, samples? Visit the
FamilySOUP office at 1506 Starr Drive, Suite C, Yuba City and
we’ll help. We’re open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
